In the vast, green fields of the cannabis plant, a humble compound begins its journey, one that would shape the destiny of many other cannabinoids. This compound is CBG, or cannabigerol, often overshadowed by its more famous relatives, THC and CBD. Yet, in its quiet way, CBG holds the key to the very existence of these better-known cannabinoids.
Imagine the cannabis plant as it grows, each leaf unfurling under the sun's gentle warmth. Deep within its cells, CBG plays the role of the "mother" cannabinoid. It’s not just any ordinary molecule; it’s a precursor, the source from which THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids are born.
As the plant matures, CBG is transformed by enzymes into these other compounds, each with its own unique properties. Without CBG, these transformations wouldn't be possible. That’s also why most mature cannabis contains only a small amount of CBG: by harvest time, much of it has already become something else.

CBG and the endocannabinoid system
Like other cannabinoids, CBG interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors found throughout the body, from the brain to the immune system. Researchers are still working out exactly how CBG interacts with the ECS’s CB1 and CB2 receptors; so far, it appears to bind to them more gently than THC does.
CBG isn’t generally known to produce the kind of “high” associated with THC.

What the research says (so far)
Scientists have only recently started studying CBG on its own, and most of that work is early-stage lab and animal research. Nothing about CBG’s effects in people has been proven, and it isn’t approved to treat, cure, or prevent any condition.
For now, CBG is a fascinating piece of the cannabis story: a minor cannabinoid that makes many of the others possible. We’ll keep sharing what we learn as the research develops. If you have questions about whether a CBG product is right for you, talk with your healthcare provider.
